· Students of Chinese 103 will expect to work rigorously in this fast paced class. The goal is to learn 130 new characters and approximately 200 words this term. · Students will start writing short paragraphs by writing narratives for each lesson and a movie script for a movie project. · Students will work on improve skills in mastering pronunciation and tones by recording each lesson narrative onto audio cassette tapes, CDs, or webfiles and through movie-making. · Students are required to contribute meaningful time on their movie project which will create opportunities for simulated real conversations. Grading System and requirements: 1) Attendances: absences and tardiness are strongly disfavored by the instructor. Be courteous and report your absence beforehand. After 1 free ticket (1 absence), each unreported absence will be counted as 1 point off the final grade. Chronic and habitual tardiness will be warned and treated equally as absences if not corrected.
2)
Assignment
13% -- Students will submit their assignments as directed on the last page of this
syllabus.
Be sure
to turn in assignments on time.
3)
Narratives on each of
the 4 lessons 20% -- Students will retell each lesson in a narrative
fashion and record their narratives on audio cassettes, CDs, or webfiles. There are usually two
separate texts to each lesson and students may choose either text for
recording.
4)
Film project on DVD 15%: students will shoot a 10-minute film project as
their oral final. The process of getting familiar with the recording equipment,
script writing, transferring and editing is extensive and time consuming. Because of the nature of this
project, both the students and staff at LRC are essential factors to their final
productions. Glitches in using technology are inevitable and problems are
especially challenging during week 9 and 10. The final product will be graded
upon the accuracy in tones and pronunciation, utilization of sound effect and
overall presentation. 5) Quizzes 32% -- 4 quizzes on Ch. 7, 8, 9, 10 will be given throughout the term in lieu of a Midterm. 6) Final Exam 20% -- Written exam on Lessons 7-10 on Monday, June 5, 10:30-11:50 a.m. The following ten-grade option will be applied in this class:
